Ram Navami: Birth Celebrations of Lord Rama



The day on which Lord Rama, the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu, incarnated in human form in Ayodhya is celebrated as Ram Navami. He is the ardha ansh of Vishnu. The word “Rama” factually means one who is exquisitely heavenly and who offers happiness to others, and one in whom the solons exult.

Ram Navami comes on the 9th day of the bright fortnight in the month of Chaitra according to Hindu calendar which as per Gregorian calendar comes in April. It corresponds with Vasant/Chaitra Navratri or Chaitra Durga Puja. Consequently in a number of states, the festival is celebrated for nine days. This day, marking the birthday of Lord Rama, is also perceived as the wedding day of Rama and Sita and therefore similarly denoted to as Kalyanotsavam.

The tale of Shree Ram as stated in Ramayana. He is a mythological figure, the essence of all is that virtuous and true, the gent who defeated the cruel king, Ravana. He isn’t an idol, but has been known as a god by followers of Hinduism. Hence, no wonder why his birth is feted every year with solemnity and pleasure.

How to Fast

The Ram Navami vrata is obligatory for the disciples of Ram. Being one among the extremely extolled vratas in which can abolish one’s depravities and moreover confer deliverance, it is observed with extreme care and devotion.

The vrata starts from the night before the fast. On the Navami day the devotee has to carry on fasting, doing pooja, japa of Ram Mantra and hawan in the name Lord Ram.

There are 4 kinds of fasts to be observed on Ram Navami:

  • Eating only one time in the day (contains potatoes cooked in any form lacking turmeric, garlic, ginger and/or onion)
  • Fasting for 9 days from the beginning of Chaitra’s Navratri
  • Fasting till noon
  • Fasting till twelve o’clock

Milk and Milk products like tea, coffee, and curd along with water, fruits and fruit extracts are only permitted to consume while fasting.


Hymn programs are arranged at homes and in temples. In these programs, hymns admiring the qualities of Shree Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, and Hanuman are chanted. Often Ramayana Katha is also enacted, or singing of the complete Ramayana is also done. Numerous people either execute Akhanda Ramayana Path or just recite Sundarkand.
